Unit 1

Unit 1 – Matter and Change

Objectives

These are the concepts you will be tested on for this unit.  Prior to the test, be sure you can do these things.

·        Define chemistry.

·        Differentiate between the different branches of chemistry

·        Find examples of chemistry in day to day life with "real world" applications.

·        Compare and Contrast basic research, applied research, and technological development.

·        Distinguish between the physical and chemical properties of matter

·        Classify changes of matter as physical or chemical.

·        Explain the tendancies of solid, liquid and gas states of matter in both written and diagram form.

·        Explain the law of conservation of energy as it applies to matter.

·        Distinguish between a homogenous mixtures, heterogenous mixtures,  and a pure substance

·        Use the periodic table to name elements given their symbols and vice versa.

·        Describe the arrangement of the periodic table

·        List the characteristics that distinguish metals, non-metal, and metalloids

·        Label the names and identify characteristics of the different groups on the periodic table.
